June 5 – Three chicks are hatched and in the brooder.  Two are Blue/Black/Splash Orpingtons.  One splash and one that looks black (the little apple butt in the middle).  The black chick in back is one from my chickens.  Black Orp Jack is the father and I believe the Australorp, Mathilda, may be the mother.  Three more eggs are pipped – a BBS orp, one of mine and one of my Welsummers.

Sadly, two pipped and died before they could get out.  The little splash here was born with a “rough navel”.  These are problems caused by low temps in the incubator.  The navel closed up quickly, thankfully.  The chicks are a little wobbly (also caused by low temps), but they are coming around.
