Sept 8 – One of my splash Orpingtons.  In this picture I do not see that it is a male.  However, in the coming weeks, his comb and wattles get larger and redder and his tail feathers develop.  The BBS Orpington cockerels develop more slowly than the Buffs, at least mine all have.  I didn’t even realize Jack, big ol’ handsome Jack, was a cockerel until he was nearly 6 months old and he suddenly developed the comb and tail.  So while I wasn’t as lucky as I thought with my hatchlings, I still got 2 of 3 pullets (unless the Blue suddenly starts developing … but Blue appears quite girly, so I don’t expect it to happen).  I only wish I had a picture of the two splashes together at this age.
